industrial buildings

industrial buildings
The understanding that high-tech buildings were unsuitable (because of weather conditions and industrial wear and tear) for industry has resulted in a return to traditional cladding and construction. Jonathan Glancey writes that it is ironic ‘that the components usually reflect the world of prewar engineering: split pins and tie-rods, drilled steel struts and crossbars’ (1989:148). Architects have also employed the past in predictable ways using bright, strikingly coloured doors and cladding, plus yards of glass. Some buildings reflect the products they house (for example, nuclear power stations are uniformly severe), while others embrace and express their owners’ corporate image or ethos (for example, Richard Rogers’s costly but very stylish Linn Products building in Glasgow). Many still require regular repainting, materials replacement (for example, of fabric), and maintenance while others have been made out of traditional materials (such as the return to brick for warehouses) because new materials such as plastic and aluminium are not tough or durable enough.
